Myth: Teething Causes Fevers

When it comes to baby teething 🦷 symptoms, there’s a lot of conflicting information out there. One of the most common myths we encounter is that teething causes fevers🌡️

Not only is that not true 🤯, but it can also be a harmful misconception

  • If your baby has a fever (a rectal temperature >100.4 F in an infant) - something else❗ is going on.
  • It may be a virus or mild illness, but don't ✋ assume it's teething

Why does the myth exist?

Timing 🕗

  • Most (but not all) babies get their first tooth between 6️⃣ and 🔟 months of age.
  • During this same time in an 👶 infant's life, the immunity they received from mom during pregnancy wears off.
  • Infants this age start to get mobile and explore the world 🌏 - which exposes them to a wide variety of childhood illnesses and 🦠 germs.
  • Due to this coincidence of timing, teething often is blamed for sick symptoms such as changes in stool patterns, runny nose, and 🙊 FEVERS!

Summary: Teething can cause drooling and fussiness. Teething will NOT cause 🤒 fevers > 100.4.
